Types of Best Pool Slides

If you’re shopping for swimming pool slides, then there are several important factors you should keep in mind. While it might seem as simple as picking out the slide that looks like it’ll be the most fun, in fact, there are many ways you could make a critical mistake if you don’t do your research.

Luckily, we’ve done this legwork for you: what follows is our guide to shopping for and purchasing your ideal pool slide. We’ve included in our guide everything from space concerns to safety considerations, so you can make your pool slide purchase with the utmost confidence.

The Size of the Slide

This one may seem fairly obvious, but it’s crucial for anyone looking for the best pool slide to determine the size of slide they need. There are two key measurements to consider: the overall height of the slide and the length of the “flume” (the part you slide down).
Slides can range from around 4 feet to over 8 ½ feet in height, and the flumes can run from just under 7 feet to almost 14 ½ feet long. The size you need will depend on the age and body size of your swimmers, as well as your available space.

Consider the Footprint

Beyond the safety implications of slide size, another critical consideration is the slide’s footprint. Before you purchase a pool slide, first determine how much space you have available to devote to the slide. Be sure you factor in space for the ladder, the flume, any installation components, and enough room for swimmers to access the ladder.

You will also want to consider the slide’s “visual footprint.” That is, you should ensure that the slide you purchase is one you won’t mind looking at, as even the smallest slides are large enough to make a significant visual impact on your space.

Surface and Material

We’ve come a long way from the rickety slides of the past, which featured lots of exposed metal and sub-par building materials. Each pool water slide you’ll find in this guide is constructed with sturdy, high-quality materials that will stand up to frequent use, as well as contact with chemicals like chlorine.

Most of the slides in our guide are constructed from acrylic and fiberglass. These materials are durable plastics that don’t break down when coming into contact with chlorinated pool water.
Note: if you have a salt pool, be sure to check that the slide is suited for saltwater.

Location is Critical

The intended location for your new slide is probably the most important practical factor you’ll need to consider when selecting one to buy. Making sure you have enough space for the slide is an obvious factor; however, there are other things to keep in mind.

For instance, if you want a slide with a curve, which direction do you want it to turn? You don’t want to discover that the slide you purchased turns in the wrong direction after it has already arrived!
Also, ensure the location is away from fences and other access points to promote safety and security.

Nice and Curvy Slide

Just how curvy do you want your slide to be? In the next section, we will cover the different styles of pool slides you can choose from. First, though, you should think about whether you want a slide that is mostly straight, or one that has more twists and turns.

Most of the slides featured here have at least some curve to them, but there are options for the more adventurous, as well—including some with full 360-degree rotations! Just keep in mind that curvier slides tend to be more expensive and will often require a more involved installation process.

Straight, Molded, or Elephant Leg Slide

Now let’s take a look at the three different style of pool slides available: straight, molded, and elephant leg.

  • Straight: These pool slides have straight ladders or stairways and flumes with a broad curve, making them the most basic slides available.
  • Molded: These slides have a relatively small footprint, making them ideal if you have limited space. They tend to be steeper and curvier than straight leg slides.
  • Elephant Leg: Named for their larger “footprint,” these slides are often the curviest and most exciting options. They are almost always taller than the other options and tend to be the priciest.

Ease of Installation and Water Hookup

You should take into account the installation process before selecting a pool slide. Who will be installing it? How many people are required for installation? What are the necessary tools?
The level of difficulty for installation is a critical factor for this kind of purchase, as proper installation and assembly will ensure your slide’s longevity and maximize its functionality.

You will also want to consider each slide’s requirements for water hookups. Some slides only require a simple garden hose setup, while others need to be connected to a plumb-through return line. Some even offer the option to use either method.

Safety Tips for Swimming Pool Slides

Slide safety should always be your highest concern, and it’s ours too. While these slides conform to established safety standards, you should still keep the following tips in mind to ensure safe and secure pool fun:

  • Read installation and safety guidelines carefully and completely to guarantee proper installation and use of your new slide.
  • Familiarize yourself with each slide’s safety features, like molded handrails, enclosed ladders, and side wall heights.
  • As with pool use in general, always monitor children while they are using the pool slide.
  • Ensure the slide is suitable for the ages of those who will use it.

Since this slide, when assembled, leaves minimal metal components exposed, it is appropriate for both chlorine and saltwater inground pools. Another great benefit of this slide is that it gives you the option to use either a plum-through return line or a standard garden hose for the water delivery system. This will surely give you more options for where you can install your slide, as you won’t be limited by the location of your pool’s pre-installed plumb lines.

S.R.Smith 698-209-58123 Cyclone Right CurveS.R.Smith 698-209-58123 Cyclone Right Curve

If space is your primary concern when shopping for a new pool slide, then the S.R. Smith Cyclone is the slide for you. With its small footprint, it is the perfect slide for those with limited space around their inground pools. It is similar in design and features to S.R. Smith’s popular Turbo Twister slide (see review below), but in a much smaller, 4-foot-tall package. In fact, this slide only requires 6’8” by 5’6’ of deck space!

Given its smaller size and more limited 175 pound weight capacity, it is probably not appropriate for most adults. But smaller children will love the wide curve and dips of this slide’s 7-foot long flume.
Like S.R. Smith’s other slides, the Cyclone adheres to the highest industry safety criteria and includes many of the same safety features as the larger slides, including molded handrails and fully enclosed steps to ensure safe climbing with wet feet.
The Cyclone also features a simple garden hose water delivery system, making this part of the installation process a snap. Also, as this is a smaller slide with fewer component parts, assembling it doesn’t take much time or effort at all. With two people working together and a careful reading of the instructions, assembly and installation shouldn’t take any more than 45 minutes or so.

Also, since the Cyclone uses a garden hose water delivery system, it can be adapted for use as an above ground pool slide. So, if you have a sturdy deck near or surrounding your pool, the Cyclone is a strong contender for best above ground pool slide. If you do go this route of adapting the Cyclone for use with an above ground pool, though, be sure to take extra precautions to ensure the safety of the sliders.

Remember, this slide isn’t optimized for above ground use, so you will want to be extra cautious with your installation and assembly to avoid injury and damage to your product.
Finally, the Cyclone comes in three attractive colors—sandstone, gray granite, and taupe—to perfectly accommodate any style of backyard décor or color scheme. Any one of these neutral tones will add an element of class and sophistication to your outdoor area, while providing hours of joyful water play for the little ones.

  • Like all S.R. Smith slides, it comes with a 3-year product warranty.
  • It is great for younger children.
  • It can be fairly easily adapted as an above ground pool slide.

Things We Didn't Like

  • It is only available with a right curve flume, which may limit your options for placement; however, the slide’s small footprint mitigates this issue somewhat.

S.R. Smith 688-209-58123 TurboTwister Right CurveS.R. Smith 688-209-58123 TurboTwister Right Curve

As the “big brother” of the Cyclone, the S.R. Smith TurboTwister slide offers all of the smaller version’s features but with a steeper, more thrilling ride. At over 8 ½ feet tall and with a nearly 14 ½-foot flume, the TurboTwister is ideal for those swimmers who are looking for a little bit of adventure.

And with its 275-pound weight accommodation, the adventure seeking isn’t limited to just the kids! Most adults, as long as they weigh in under the 275-pound limit, can have as much fun with this slide as the little ones. Your kids will definitely love seeing you out there splashing around and having as much fun as they are.

Just like all S.R. Smith pool products and slides, the TurboTwister meets all of the Consumer Product Safety Commission standards for the industry. And even a quick look at the slide will tell you that it is constructed with safety and durability in mind. As long as you attend closely and carefully to the instruction manual during assembly and installation, you can set your mind at ease that your slide is safe for use and will last you many years.

The only potential downside to this excellent pool slide is its relatively large footprint. With that in mind, you will certainly want to determine how much deck space you have available and compare that with the deck space required for the TurboTwister before you decide to purchase. Even with that consideration in mind though, the TurboTwister is simply an excellent product. It may take up a bit more space than other options, but the thrills and shrieks of enjoyment you’ll hear from your kids and neighbors will make losing a little bit of deck space worth it year after year.

Intex Inflatable Play CenterIntex Inflatable Play Center

While it’s probably not the kind of thing you think of when you think about swimming pool slides, the Intex Inflatable Play Center offers a great alternative to the more traditional slides and is surely the best inflatable pool slide on the market.

What could be better than a portable, inflatable slide that stores easily in the off seasons? The Intex Play Center is the ideal option for anyone who isn’t ready to invest in one of the more permanent and pricey pool slides mentioned in this article. Installation is foolproof: just inflate, screw on your basic garden hose to the sprayer, place the slide at the edge of your inground pool, and let the wet and wild fun begin!

Plus, unlike so many of the other options, storing your Intex Play Center is as easy as unhooking the hose, deflating the slide, and folding it up to stash away in your garage until the sun comes back. It sure takes up a lot less space in your storage area than the alternatives.

Obviously, this slide is only meant for the little ones, so be sure to keep adults and older kids off if you want to ensure their safety and your slide’s wellbeing.
If you’re looking for an entry-level pool slide that will keep the kids happy and playing without breaking the bank, the Intex Inflatable Play Center is the way to go. It may not be as durable for the long-term as many of the other slides we’ve recommended, but it’s features and practicality make it worth the small price tag.
