Cleanliness is an important part of our culture, not only because it makes you more pleasant to be around and interact with, but also because it has been found to be a deterrent to sickness. As a consequence of this discovery, all manner of personal hygiene was completely revolutionized and today it is a part of most people’s routine to do things like wash their hands and brush their teeth very frequently.

If you are going to be washing your hands all the time, though, then you will want to know what the best hand soap to do it with is. That’s where this article comes in. I have researched and selected a few good choices for hand soap so you can keep yourself clean and healthy! Keeping yourself clean isn’t all that is important, however. Consider the Roomba 805 robotic cleaner as the best option when it comes to cleaning your floors and not getting your hands dirty.

The Importance of Washing Hands

Most people know that washing your hands is important and something that should be done frequently, especially before and after certain activities, but because "everybody" knows this, a lot of people let it be background noise in their daily routines and assign this nebulous “important” quality to it because they have been told to and not because it has any particular impact on their daily lives.

Some people even allow themselves to be lax with both hand-washing technique and frequency because they have never had its importance reinforced. Handwashing itself is actually rather new, as far as history is concerned. It wasn’t until the 1980s that it even became common practice. Washing your hands was discovered to help prevent the transmission of certain diseases and today remains the only way to prevent some types of diseases and viruses from affecting the general public.

Best Hand Soap Reviews

Product Features

  • Mrs. Meyer's handsoap is cruelty-free which means it is not tested on animals before use.

  • It contains many plant extracts and oils that should help to condition your hands upon use.

  • It comes in many varieties, not just hand soap, so if you end up really liking this soap you can get some for other uses that will match the scent of this one.

  • It comes in many scents, not just basil, so if you prefer lavender or geranium those are options as well.

  • It is environmentally friendly so when you are done using the soap and the bottle is empty you can simply toss it into the recycling and forget about it.

Mrs. Meyer’s liquid hand soap comes in a basil scent which is a very unique scent for hand soap. It uses essential oils to provide nourishment and nutrients to the skin on your hands and keep them healthy as well as clean. If you find the product to your liking you are in luck, Mrs. Meyers produces this soap in several different varieties for different purposes and you can get soaps that match the scent of this one for different uses like laundry detergent or body wash.

I have heard that some people felt like the scent would linger on their hands for extended periods, but I did not experience this phenomenon myself. I found the scent to be fairly mild and not distracting to my sense of smell throughout the day. I was also pleased to find out that this soap is made cruelty free, as are all of the products made by Mrs. Meyers.

Things We Didn't Like

  • The scent may be overpowering and long-lasting

Product Features

  • This soap has been tested by dermatologists and is considered to be gentle on the hands.

  • It is mildly scented so as not to be distracting throughout the day or unpleasantly overpowering to the senses.

  • It is “non-antibacterial” soap which means it shouldn’t remove any helpful or harmless bacteria on your hands upon use.

  • It comes in a bottle with its own pump so there is no need to come up with a delivery method yourself.

  • It comes in a variety of scents so there is likely one available that you will enjoy.

The liquid hand soap from Softsoap comes in several different scent options, some more pleasant than others. In most cases, their different scent options are vaguely pleasant and only have mild strength, but I personally recommend staying away from the "Milk & Honey" scent as I and many other customers found it unpleasant and strong. Otherwise, the soap is very effective and shouldn't cause any problems to your skin or nose.

It is a non-antibacterial soap which means it shouldn't have a negative effect on harmless or helpful bacteria on the hands. This is important because a lot of antibacterial hand soaps will use harmful chemicals to achieve that effect even though they are only effective on harmless bacteria as most dangerous bacteria are resistant to anti-bacterial chemicals.

Things We Didn't Like

  • Bottle caps may be unsecure

Product Features

  • Dirt-infused to provide texture and assist with removing substances like oil, soil, or grease.

  • It does not use harmful chemicals or solvents for cleaning, instead, it uses simple dirt.

  • Uses thin particulates that won’t clog or damage drains and piping.

  • The particulate used is highly efficient for cleaning your hands, but also provides a softening effect that leaves them feeling better.

  • Uses all-natural materials and nothing harmful to your skin so it is safe for those that have sensitive skin.

This heavy-duty hand cleaner from Grip Clean is extremely effective. I have often found that it is difficult to remove oils and grease from your hands with traditional soaps. If you also have this problem then I highly recommend this hand cleaner. It is made with simple dirt particulates that give it a texture that is very effective at removing material from your hands and ensuring that you get them as clean as possible.

You might also experience a softening effect on your hands that I thought was very similar to using a pumice stone. This is likely due to the particulate in the soap that gives it its effectiveness against certain materials when cleaning.

Things We Didn't Like

  • The quality comes at a much higher cost

Product Features

  • It comes in many scents, not just lavender, so if you find that scent unpleasant but you like the product itself you can get a different scent.

  • It contains many plant extracts and oils that should help to condition your hands upon use.

  • It is environmentally friendly so when you are done using the soap and the bottle is empty you can simply toss it into the recycling and forget about it.

  • Mrs. Meyer's hand soap is cruelty-free which means it is not tested on animals.

This is another hand soap option from Mrs. Meyer’s, this time it is lavender scented and it comes in a convenient bottle with a pump attached so you don’t have to come up with your own delivery option like you would have with their previous option. This one is also made completely cruelty free, no animals are used in the testing process. It is just as environmentally friendly as the previous option and uses all recyclable materials.

Unfortunately, this option is slightly held back by the fact that the pumps aren’t very effective. I found that they were not very powerful and it often took a lot of pumps to get a sufficient amount of soap out of the bottle. You might be better off just moving this soap into a different bottle with a more effective pump.

  • This soap was designed to clean effectively without causing dry skin or irritation.

  • It does not use any fragrances or dyes or any other harmful chemicals.

  • It comes in an unscented variety so you don't have to worry about it lingering and distracting your sense of smell or being irritatingly overpowering.

  • Uses recyclable materials for the bottle but does not use them for the pump so remember to put the pump in the trash.

  • It is USDA certified to be 97% biobased, which means it uses almost completely all-natural materials in its construction.

This hand soap from Seventh Generation is very clean. It doesn’t use any harmful chemicals to get the job done which is always a plus. This means that it is an excellent choice if you suffer from some kinds of skin conditions or just have sensitive skin in general. You will also probably like the design of the bottles; I know I did.

I did notice that the pumps on these bottles are just as ineffective as the previous option, so you might want to transfer this soap to another bottle if you really like it. Otherwise, it is the best hand soap for dry skin for keeping your hands clean without having to worry about harmful chemicals irritating your skin.

This foaming hand soap is created by Beessential for Beekeepers by Beekeepers. It comes in a variety of pleasing scents and uses all-natural materials to keep it environmentally friendly. It also uses some all-natural materials that are designed for moisturizing the skin so that you aren’t just cleaning your skin when you use this soap, you are also healing any cracks and ensuring that your skin doesn’t get too dry which makes it the best moisturizing hand soap on this list.

This is an organic hand soap so there are no harmful chemicals and Beessential doesn’t use any dyes or artificial fragrances in their soap, this makes it the best natural hand soap option. If you have skin conditions or sensitive skin then this is a fantastic choice for you.

The only concerns I had about this soap were that some people were complaining of it “going bad” over time and developing an unpleasant scent, but I didn’t notice any problems like that occurring personally and was generally pleased with its performance.

Things We Didn't Like

  • Might have a lower shelf-life than other soap options

Product Features

  • The raw materials for this product are all-natural from organic agricultural plants or wild plants.

  • None of the products from Sonnet use animal products or test their products on animals at all so this is a good soap option for vegans.

  • It uses biodegradable materials which makes the entire product very environmentally friendly.

  • It does not contain materials that should irritate sensitive skin or exacerbate certain skin conditions.

  • It comes in five different scents so there are plenty of options to choose from and get something that smells pleasing to you.

Sonett is a well-known creator of fine hand soaps and this option upholds that standard. They are known for their environmentally conscientious products and their interest in cooperation. As a consequence of that interest, most of the materials used in their products come from all over the world. They are sourced from wild plants and organically grown plants in places like Greece, Italy, and Spain as well as others.

The soap itself uses all plant-based materials which makes it very environmentally friendly and the container that it comes in is fully biodegradable so there is no cause for concern when it comes to the environment.

My favorite aspect of this soap option is that the scent is pretty mild, so I didn't notice it very much and when I did it was pleasant and didn't offend my sense of smell or distract it at any point. You can get several different scent options, though my favorite was the lavender-scented option.

Different Soaps for Various Skin Types

If you know that you have particularly sensitive skin you may want to consider checking your soap’s ingredient list to see if it includes things like vitamins or certain plant extracts because these things will assist in keeping your hands conditioned and feeling good.

If a hand soap contains a lot of alcohol or certain acids it might cause your hands to become irritated when you use it. A quick look at the ingredients list and a little experimentation with different soaps should help to prevent problems like that.

What Makes the Best Antibacterial Hand Soap?

Soap can come in many different forms and is essential to ensure you are getting your hands as clean as possible. Hand soap is commonly found in both solid and liquid variants. For the purposes of cleaning your hands and preventing the spread of disease, you should look to use liquid hand soap because solid soaps have a chance to be contaminated upon use and still have microorganisms and bacteria on them when the next person uses them.

It is preferable to gather the soap without touching the dispenser, so an automatic bathroom soap dispenser is best, though a standard soap pump should not be an issue.

You may find that some soaps are listed as "anti-bacterial" and list a percentage of effectiveness. The truth is, just about any soap will be equally as effective as the next for keeping your hands clean and reducing the spread of disease so it is difficult to decide on a “best hand soap.” These anti bacterial soaps are usually only effective on harmless bacteria and anything that would be considered harmful is usually resistant to their anti-bacterial agents. Whatever soap you have available should do the trick whether it is antimicrobial soap or not, so the “best antibacterial soap” will be no different from another soap.
